Ankyloglossia (Heart Shaped Tongue)

A condition that presents in newborns in which the frenulum, tissue connecting tongue to the bottom of the mouth is too thick or short. This condition can restrict the movement of the tongue. Restricted movement can negatively impact feeding, swallowing and speaking. Signs of ankyloglossia include a heart shaped tongue when an infant attempts to stick their tongue out past their lip. Treatment options can include close monitoring of frenulum for stretching as the baby grows, increasing oral strength with occupational therapy or lactation consults, or surgical intervention.
